The supporters groups from the three Cascadia MLS clubs have agreed on new rules for the Cascadia Cup after MLS moved to an unbalanced schedule in 2012.

The Emerald City Supporters, Southsiders and Timbers Army agreed that all matches will count towards the Cascadia Cup, even though the new unbalanced MLS schedule means each team will play a different number of home games against their Cascadia rivals this season.

“We all agreed that this was the simplest format, one that all the fans will find easiest to follow,” says Brenton Walters, Southsiders spokesperson. (Note: we want to be inclusive and change to ALL FANS).

Portland Timbers will host both Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps twice, Vancouver will see Portland once and Seattle twice at home, and Seattle will only host each team once. Despite this imbalance, the three supporters groups agreed to count all matches equally in order to keep the 2012 Cascadia Cup format simple.

“It’s unfortunate that the league didn’t work out a balanced schedule for the Cascadia teams,” says Garrett Dittfurth of the Timbers Army. “We think the league should fix this for next season so that no team has an unfair advantage in Cup matches.”

The Cascadia Cup will be awarded to the team with the most points after all matches have been played or when there is a clear winner. In the event of a tie, the Cup will be awarded to the team with the best goal differential followed by best head to head performance.

Should the MLS schedule remain unbalanced in 2013, the Emerald City Supporters, Southsiders, and Timbers Army insist that the 2013 MLS schedule will allow for a redistribution of the away/home matches.

“Cascadia is home to the oldest and strongest rivalry in North American soccer, and the value that the supporters put on the Cascadia Cup reflects that,” says Greg Mockos of the Emerald City Supporters. “The league should pay attention.”

In addition supporters’ group leadership has approved the following tie-breakers to apply in the case that two teams finish equal on points.

Tie-breakers:

1. Greater number of points earned in matches between the teams concerned
2. Greater goal difference in matches between the teams concerned
3. Greater number of goals scored in matches between the teams concerned
4. Reapply first three criteria if two or more teams are still tied
5. Greater goal difference in all cup matches
6. Greater number of goals scored in all cup matches
7. Smaller number of disciplinary points in all cup matches (yellow = 1 point, red = 2 points)

These new tie-breakers will make it easier for fans to follow the standings and potential scenarios for their club winning the cup. Tie-breakers 1-6 are almost the same as those used in the UEFA and CONCACAF Champions League group stages. The main exception being that we have removed tie-breakers that look into away goals as it would likely not be a good idea with unbalanced schedules.

These new tie-breaker rules will be in effect until otherwise stated by supporters groups from all three Cascadia teams.

Background:

The Cascadia Cup was created in 2004 by supporters groups of the three Cascadia teams, and is awarded annually to the best team in the Cascadia region. Seattle and Vancouver have each won it three times, Portland has won it twice.

2012 Cascadia Cup schedule:

With the unbalanced 2012 MLS schedule, Portland plays four home and two away matches, Vancouver plays three home and three away matches and Seattle plays two home and four away matches.

Format: home team v. away team

May 19: Vancouver Whitecaps v. Seattle Sounders

About the ECS Monthly Happy Hours

Many have asked, “What’s the best way to get involved in ECS and really get to know the members?” Matchday is usually the worst time as most of us are busy fulfilling differing roles for ECS operations (tifo, capo, street team, etc.). That is why we have created the monthly happy hours for people to come out when most of our core members are really able to relax and have a drink away from the chaos. Everyone is invited to join whether you are an ECS member or not!

We encourage anyone who wants to meet new people, find out how you can get more involved, or just have a pint with friends to join us. This is the perfect opportunity to really get to know some of the leadership and core members in a very casual environment, as well as let them get to know you. Feel free to come by yourself or with other friends who might be interested in the ECS and Sounders. Please don’t feel that you have to join the tournament to attend. We will have ECS members there just to hang out and meet new people. I can guarantee someone will even buy you a pint. The happy hours will rotate every month.

Entry Fee & Registration

Competitive Tournament – $20
Beginners Tournament – $10
Players must arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tournament or players will forfeit their entry fee and the spot in the tournament. The competitive tournament will be limited to 32 players and 16 players for the beginners tournament.

Competitive Tournament Format

1. Players must pay full entry fee(s) prior to taking part of the competition and must be registered and checked in before the start of the tournament.

2. Players will be drawn randomly for the 8 different groups and will select club teams in the order they are drawn. Only club teams are allowed and once a team is selected, they cannot be selected again.

3. The competition will be held in a Group/Knockout format, with 32 entrants being separated into their eight (8) respective groups. The top two (2) from each group (with a total of 16 entrants) will advance and be seeded into the knockout stage.

4. In the Group Stage, three (3) points will be awarded for a win. With one (1) point being awarded for a draw and zero (0) points for a loss. All players will have a match with each person in their group once. If there are draws in total points, then the draw will be broken by way of goal differential within the group, goals scored within the group and then by three other tie-breaking criteria. If the players are still drawn, then a tie-breaking match (using knockout round format) will be played.

5. There can be no substitutions for other players during the competition.

BASIC GAMEPLAY RULES

1. Here are the match rules for all games during the competition, including the Group Stages and Knockout Rounds:
• Console: XBox 360
• Team Level: Professional
• Half Length: 6 Minutes
• Controls: New. Legacy Defending cannot be used, but choice of control scheme is permissible.
• Game Speed: Normal

2. No international teams, custom made teams or Virtual Pros allowed. Any other club provided by the game is fair use.

3. All knockout stage matches that end in a draw at the end of regulation will continue in extra with two (2) additional halves. If the match is still drawn, penalty kicks will decide.

4. Players will conduct themselves appropriately and fairly. Players and spectators are not allowed to interfere with any of the matches or persistently harass other players or the officials. Such behavior will result in cautions and/or disqualifications. Players actively in the competition will receive cautions (yellow cards) for breach of any of these rules. A second caution (yellow card) or an offense deemed serious enough by competition organizers, may result in a disqualification (red card) from the competition without refund of their entry fee.

4. If a player drops out/leaves a game once it has started for any reason, the match is then forfeited to a score of 3:0. No exceptions.

5. If a player fails to appear within five (5) minutes from the start of their match, their match is forfeited to a score of 3:0. Competition organizers will make attempts to announce at intervals to ensure players are aware of their match times. No exceptions.

6. In the rare event that both members from a match get disqualified for whatever reason, the match will be declared a 0:0 “No Contest” and are subject to disqualification from the entire competition without refund of their entry fee. No exceptions.

7. The rules are completely non-negotiable and are subject to change by the competition organizers, referees and administrator.

8. Please remember that we are here to have fun and ECS is doing its best to run the competition. Things will be a bit rocky at first so please be patient.

For November’s ECS Monthly Happy Hour, we are collaborating with American Outlaws Seattle and the Armed Services Group to celebrate Veterans Day and a US Mens National Team viewing on Friday, November 11th @ The Atlantic Crossing Pub.

The US Mens National Team play France in an international friendly. Though the match will be played live at 12pm, we will be showing a repeat at 7pm. If you know the outcome of the match, please do not share it so that those in attendance can enjoy

Please do not feel any pressure to do so, but if you feel so inclined, take a moment to thank the armed services members who will be in attendance and possibly buy them a beer for their services.

Date: Friday, November 11th

Time: 5pm~

Match Viewing: 7pm

Venue: The Atlantic Crossing (6508 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, WA)

Many have asked, “What’s the best way to get involved in ECS and really get to know the members?” Matchday is usually the not necessarily the best time to ask as most of us are busy fulfilling differing roles for ECS operations (tifo, capo, street team, etc.). This is why we have created the monthly happy hours for people to come out when most of our core members are really able to relax and have a drink away from the chaos.

The happy hours will rotate every month.

Facebook link is here in case you want to invite someone who doesn’t frequent the forums:

Saturday’s result didn’t do this team and it’s supporters justice. Just looking at the box score says everything. Sounders lost the battle for shots 19-12 to Real Salt Lake. Of those 12 shots Sounders FC managed to get exactly zero on target compared to RSL’s 11. Thus Alvaro Sabario was able to nail a brace and Ned Grabavoy a goal on a powerful shot in SSFC’s defeat Saturday.

However, all is not lost. As RSL’s gaffer Jason Kries told MLSsoccer.com “But we’re also very cognizant of it only being halftime. There’s another match at Seattle, and we know how difficult it is to play there.”

It’s obvious that the players are going to have a bit of a mental struggle they need to overcome. As James Riley told the Seattle Times “We haven’t really gotten beat that bad in the three years, especially when the games are on the line. Definitely it’s a trying moment for the group. We’ll see what type of character shows up Wednesday. That’s all we can do.” Obviously that quote is a bit of bullshit but is indicative that a feeling of doubt may be creeping through the locker room.

We already know that Sounders’ have the best supporters and fans in all of MLS. It’s going to be up to us on Wednesday to come out and get behind the club. This is the time where it is so important as a supporter to stand strong, be loud and not let the deficit bring down the mood in the section.

As you pre-funk for the match on Wednesday please try to keep in mind why we’re there: to support Sounders FC. SSFC has some terrible odds against them. Our backs are up against the metaphorical wall. Please try to not over-consume. It would be a shame to have anyone miss what could be the final mach of 2011 in Royal Brougham Park due to over-consumption.

On Wednesday be ready to bring your a-game. Be ready to sing. Be ready to wave a big fucking flag. Be ready to follow the capo. This is our most important game of the year. This is our year. We can do this but we’re going to need each and every voice!

After seven months the MLS season is almost ready to draw to an end. Sounders FC find themselves ending the 2011 MLS season on the road in LA in the Home Depot Center. It’s a stadium that Sounders FC and Emerald City Supporters are quite familiar with.

Having been to LA once before in 2011 Sounders FC will want to build upon the positive momentum they started back on the 4th of July with a forgettable, but important, 0:0 draw against Galaxy. Earlier this season Sounders FC drew Galaxy’s stadium mates with the same snoozer of a scoreline. Hopefully, with Sounders FC resting players for the playoffs this match won’t have the same drab finish.

Chivas come into the match on average form having won once, lost twice and drawn two in their last five matches. They’re already eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs so they have nothing left to play for but pride. Chivas is led by former NYRB and Galaxy star Juan Pablo Angel. He’s on ten goals with one assist on the season. Next is the dangerous midfielder Nick LaBrocca, whom Sounders managed to shutdown in their August meeting, on eight goals and six assists. Sounders FC will have to play special attention to him as he’s having a career year and can turn any match in Chivas’ favor. Last on this list is Justin Braun on eight goals and five assists. Between these three Sounders FC will have their hands full defensively. Shut them down, put one or two past Dan Kennedy and we’ll be looking at a certain victory.

It may be a game that has no implications on the western conference standings but that doesn’t mean that the game in itself won’t be worth watching! Head on out to one our signature viewing parties and hang out with your ECS brothers and sisters.
What’s left to win?
Cascadia Cup? Check.
US Open Cup? Check.
Heritage Cup? Check.
CONCACAF Champions League? Oh, right.

This match sees the boys in Rave Green, who pulled out a win in the last 10 minutes of the match on Saturday against the Smurfs to ensure that Kasey Keller’s last regular season home MLS match was the stuff of legend. Keller himself would have been the man of the match, even if it weren’t his night, with a four-save flurry that showed the world why Keller is still one of the best keepers in MLS today. Over 64,000 packed into RBP for the third largest crowd in MLS history for a regular season match to send captain Kasey Keller out with style.

San Jose scored in the 24th minute by their entire offense, none other than Golden Boot contender Chris Wondolowski. San Jose sat back in a trap for the rest of the first half and up until the 64th minute of the second when Mauro Rosales, finally back from his knee strain, entered the match, replacing Mike Fucito.

From the moment Rosales stepped on the pitch, Sounders FC all of a sudden looked dangerous, moving the ball far better, and blowing past San Jose’s midfield. A few minutes later, Sammy Ochoa entered the match, and it was a feed from Rosales to Ochoa that opened his Sounders FC account with a timely finish in the 82nd minute.

And of course, just to have some last minute heroics to ensure that Keller’s sendoff wasn’t a bit awkward, SOOOOOPA Fred scored just five minutes later, throwing RBP into total bedlam.

After, a ceremony thanking Keller kept most of the crowd in the stands.

But enough about that. There’s plenty of soccer left to play…including tonight’s match against Monterrey. Monterrey need one point from this match to ensure that they go through to the knockout stages next year. Sounders FC have already gone through, but a point will ensure that they win the group.

With playoffs coming up (the win on Saturday locked 2nd place in MLS…), some injuries still healing, a bunch of yellow cards in CCL hanging over nine Sounders players, and no points needed to go through, Coach Sigi is certain to patch together an unusual lineup for tonight, probably going deep into the bench to ensure that our boys are well-rested, and avoid becoming ineligible for the next round through card accumulation.

Whatever the lineup, Monterrey should be bringing it for reals, as their league play has been poor of late, and it’s likely that they’ll be placing increased emphasis on CCL in order to be sure they can defend their title earned earlier this year.

This one should be good.
