These plans are currently firm, but are subject to change if circumstances dictate. Please check back here often, and also monitor the Away Thread (http://www.weareecs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=17596) — Please take your questions, comments, and suggestions there. If any changes are made, this OP will be updated.

If you selected Tacoma as your pickup location:

Be at the pickup location SR512/I5 Park and Ride (address: 10617 S. Tacoma Way, Tacoma) NO LATER than 6:00 am. The buses will leave promptly at 6:15 and they WILL leave without you.

If you selected Seattle as your pickup location:

Be at the Northgate Park & Ride (address: 10200 1st Ave. NE) near NE 103rd St. & 1st Ave NO LATER than 6:30 am. The buses will leave promptly at 7:00 and they WILL leave without you.

If you selected Bellingham as your pickup location:

Be at the Copper Hog (address: 1327 North State Street) out front NO LATER than 9:00 am. The buses will leave promptly at 9:15 and they WILL leave without you.

If you are driving up on your own:

The buses will be parking in ImPark Lot #315. We are entering at Gate C. YOU NEED TO BE AT ImPark Lot #315 BY 12:00 TO ENSURE YOU ARE ABLE TO PICK UP YOUR TICKET. ECS is going in as a group, and tickets will not be left at will-call. Give yourself plenty of time for traffic and try to get there a little early. You WILL be able to pick up your ticket at 11:00 if you wish to enter BC Place early to watch the UCL final. BlueEyedBhuddist will be passing out tickets from 11-12 at the parking location. Parking in the lot is $10 per car. You aren’t required to park there, but you might as well.

YOU MUST BRING YOUR PASSPORT/PASSPORT CARD/ENHANCED DL

The buses will NOT be making a food stop. You might get hungry. Bring food to eat. Bring drinks, too. NO GLASS.

We will arrive at BC Place at 12:00 pm. When you get off the bus, you will line up in an orderly fashion and collect your match ticket.

We are then passing through security together and entering the stadium. We will be in sections 218-221. All seats are to be treated as GA. AT NO TIME IS ANYONE PERMITTED TO LEAVE THE BUS/TICKET/ENTRANCE AREA. We don’t want anyone getting separated from the group and winding up in trouble.

It is always good protocol on away trips to keep your scarf tied at all times. I cannot stress how important it is to do so for a derby. x100.

Match starts at 2:00 pm. Go mental for 90+ minutes and never let up. NEVER LET UP. Don’t drink so much that you get sloppy and give anything less than your best. YOUR BEST IS EXPECTED. You should work to exceed that.

We’ll be held in the section for 20-30 minutes post match. Do not wander off. Do not attempt to leave. There is safety in numbers and we will walk out in numbers.

Get back on the bus (same bus, please) and we’ll head home. ETA in Seattle is 9 pm or so. Tacoma will be a bit later. Even travel monkeys have to respect the time space continuum.

You should expect that you will be under surveillance at all times while at BC Place and conduct yourselves accordingly. There will be security everywhere that you can see. There will be plainclothes officers everywhere that you may or may not see. There will be cameras trained on you wherever you are that you will not see. BEHAVE AS THOUGH YOU ARE BEING WATCHED, BECAUSE YOU ARE.

Up the Sounders! Up the ECS! Give more than your best, go fucking mental, and bring home 3 points and a head start on the Cascadia Cup!

There’s a team from California that’s well known for a mantra that they’ve espoused since the sixties: Just win, baby.

For the fourth time in just twelve days, Sounders FC did just that.

With a kickoff lineup missing seven starters, the Boys in Green weathered an early assault from a wickedly fast Dallas side. Dallas were unable to find the back of the net due to some good Sounders defense, a Save of the Week candidate (and no doubt winner…) from Bryan Meredith, and a few questionable offensive decisions during the run of play. Too bad for them, as Fredy Montero came on in the second half, scoring a brace inside of three minutes (68, 71).

Fredy entered as a second half substitution for Mauro Rosales, who was unlucky himself as the Dallas keeper, the Dallas woodwork, and a Dallas defender all got in the way of a perfectly good rapid series of strikes early in the first half.

The interesting part of the story is that Montero’s goals were assisted by Cordell Cato, making his first appearance in MLS play, and Alex Caskey, also a relative newcomer. If you’d said earlier this week that our midfield was going to be Caskey, Carrasco, Rose, and Cato, only one of whom was with the squad last season, you’d have been forgiven for raising your eyebrows a bit. But the pace of all four of them showed sparks of something interesting, and you can be sure you’ll be seeing a lot more of all of them over the coming months as fixture congestion kicks in full, and US Open Cup play and CONCACAF Champions League begin again.

Another great showing yesterday was Bryan Meredith’s play. Challenged more this match than he’d been in his previous (and only) two appearances, Meredith came up huge in the 31st minute, getting fingertips on a great Sealy header to push it against the woodwork. (What are they feeding those goalposts in Dallas?) Sealy looked stunned, shaking his head walking away from the attempt.

Which brings us to Saturday. The win over Dallas yesterday pulls us even for 2nd in the West with San Jose (22 points.) Thanks to Chicago drawing RSL (0-0) for us last night, RSL is at the top of the West table with 23 points. That makes Saturday’s match a battle for the top of the table. San Jose plays Chivas on Sunday, which could make things interesting for all three sides.

There’s plenty of bad blood between RSL and Sounders FC throughout their history, culminating in last year’s playoff series, where the Boys fell just short after a great season. But that’s 2011. This is 2012.

Real Salt Lake sat US National keeper Nick Rimando against Chicago last night with a shoulder injury. He is expected to return for Saturday. Fabian Espindola also missed last night’s game, remaining in Salt Lake City with his wife and newborn son (awwwwww….) Javier Morales left the match with an injury which is to be evaluated today, but is not thought to be serious. Kyle Beckerman picked up his fifth yellow card of the season, but through the League’s “Good Behavior Incentive” will be available on Saturday. Beckerman (He of one of the worst haircuts in the league…) will be forced to serve a one-game suspension upon receipt of his next yellow card. Instead, they should shave his head. In public. I would pay for this.

What does all of this mean? Real Salt Lake looks to be largely healthy and in one piece for the matchup on Saturday, unquestionably Sounders FC’s first real test of the season. RSL also has a bye week after this match, so there’s no reason for Jason Kreis to rest anyone. (Sportsmanship Comedy Clip, anyone?)

Are the Boys in Green as good as their record shows? Some critics claim that they’ve been the recipients of good circumstance, beneficial scheduling, poor opposing coaching decisions…

Well, there’s certainly a way to shut all that up.

Just win, baby.

Vancouver Away – May 19th, 2012 – ON SALE NOW!!!

In a little more than a month 600 ECSers will be making their way to Vancouver for the first match of the 2012 Cascadia Cup tournament. Tickets went on sale April 8th at 8pm and they’ve been going fast. As of press-time we only have about 200 tickets remaining! Depending on where you will be picked up from the bus ride and match ticket are a tidy $70 (based on Seattle pick-up). Add $10 if you’re south of Seattle and subtract $10 if you’re north.

This year we’ve listened to our members and have added a ticket-only option in addition to bus-only, a family bus and our typical drink and sing bus. If you’re only looking for the match ticket it’ll cost you about $35.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to the ECS Store and get stuck in! This trip will not be one you’ll be happy to miss!

Three matches in seven days. Nine points. Frankly, it doesn’t get any better than that. Well, unless you consider that three of those points came against LA.

Against Philadelphia on Saturday, the juggling of the lineup continued. First MLS starts for Andy Rose (who was lucky not to be ejected after two bad tackles inside the first thirty minutes) and Bryan Meredith (aka the goalkeeper who gave us the hardest time during the 2011 US Open Cup tournament, in the match against Kitsap Pumas).

Meredith finished the LA match on Wednesday after Michael Gspurning left at the half with a hip injury which will likely keep him out for 2-3 weeks. So for his 135+ minutes played this season (and his MLS career…), Meredith has kept a clean sheet.

This week has the boys in green traveling down to Dallas where they’ll be facing a much depleted side. Red cards for Daniel Hernandez (he of the flying elbows) and striker Blas Perez removes a lot of the fangs from the FC Dallas attack. Truthfully, the straight red given to Perez seemed harsh, as I’m pretty sure that he didn’t even see the Colorado defender when he went up to trap the ball. Even so, the flying karate kick nature of the foul probably warranted the card.

Brek Shea sat out on Sunday (turf toe, exhaustion), but is expected to be available against Seattle. Even so, should Shea start, the offensive threat could be seriously narrowed.

Seattle traditionally plays well against Dallas (2-1-3 MLS, 3-1-3 All Competitions) and against a weakened Dallas side, the Boys in Green should feel pretty confident going in to Wednesday’s match.

If you’re not traveling down to Dallas (and it sounds like a lot of you aren’t…) our viewing party in Seattle is at Atlantic Crossing. Can’t get to the AC? Plenty of other viewing parties around Washington and the rest of the country.

Yes, it’s another Reminder…get used to it. There’s a lot of these coming this month!

Last night, on a beautiful mid-week evening, 39,000 watched our Boys in Green finally defeat LA at Royal Brougham Park. The Sounders took advantage of an arguably depleted Galaxy side to hang yet another loss on last season’s Community Shield and current MLS Cup holder to climb up the table, jumping over an inconsistent Vancouver to take possession of third place in the West.

While the LA faithful made plenty of excuses having to do with artificial turf, a congested schedule, and missing players, one is left to wonder why Los Angeles somehow feels that Seattle is in any different a position. With nine matches in May compared to the seven LA has in the timeframe, they can’t be claiming congestion. That LA has three matches in eight days? Seattle has three in seven. You could argue that Beckham and Keane need their rest…but whose fault is the fact that LA has chosen to stock up on older DPs? In Seattle’s camp, Flaco Fernandez was unavailable, which, to be fair, doesn’t match the importance of Beckham or Keane.

Still, the idea that Arena was resting players for Saturday for an East Coast matchup with New York doesn’t seem to make any mathematical sense. Three points against Seattle effectively count double in the table. Defeating New York doesn’t help nearly as much in terms of West Coast positioning. Last season, it seemed that any changes Arena made managed to work out. This season, there’s a fair amount of second guessing as the results of all the juggling don’t seem to be working out in the Galaxy’s favor.

All that said, LA never seemed to get started. While Gaudette looked pretty sharp overall in net for LA, the Galaxy defense was a shambles, and their midfield seemed in complete disarray. Their midfield, normally the strongest part of their game, seemed ill-equipped to slow the Sounders attack, losing possession frequently, and appeared completely unable to link up with their forwards for any serious pressure.

By the way, Eddie Johnson scored again, making it two in two games. This one was scored off a picture-perfect cross by Mauro Rosales. Johnson managed to break between two defenders, and snapped a vicious header that Gaudette might have misjudged a bit. Still, the ball found the back of the net with some force, and if Johnson can take some confidence from his strike into his game, things can only get more difficult for opposing defenses.

Speaking of opening accounts… (like that transition. Smooth, right?) Fredy Montero finally opened his 2012 account with a goal that’s undoubtedly destined to be Goal of the Week (some are saying Goal of the Year…but that’s a little premature, no?), burying one in the upper left corner past an outstretched Gaudette from 35 yards out. It was really a matter of time for Fredy, having been denied twice earlier from short distance by some fairly outstanding saves by LA’s keeper. The relief was clearly visible on Fredy’s face during his celebration, and on his way back to the circle. I’m not gonna say that ECS pogoing as a backdrop to Fredy’s shot helped it at all…yeah. Yeah I am.

If Johnson and Montero are both getting warmed up, things are going to get pretty interesting offensively. While Estrada has cooled somewhat from his pace at the start of the season (kinda hard to beat a hat trick, right? Well, unless….) there’s undoubtedly plenty more coming from him.

And what better to keep that scoring going than to draw Philadelphia on Saturday? The “trade away your top scorer and your beloved keeper” experiment doesn’t seem to be working out for the Union. Nor, it would seem, is Peter Nowak, the MLS coach for the All-Star game, who managed to get himself suspended for charging onto the pitch during a player altercation against Chivas. While Philadelphia managed to hang on to win 1-0 in spite of the red cards, the extremely hot (and cheating) San Jose Smurfs kicked the Union while they were down last weekend, beating them 2-1 off of a late Steven Lenhart brace. (Does that make you as sick to read that as it did for me to write it?) One almost feels sorry for the Sons of Ben. But not really.

With seven points in seven matches, the Union are pretty desperate for the three points. But missing their coach, their second trip to the West Coast in as many weeks (hey…wasn’t the imbalanced schedule supposed to minimize travel?), and the pressure to show a result should hopefully make for an entertaining match for the Brougham Faithful.

And we can help that happen. The Boys in Green need every last voice behind them to make sure that we walk away with the three points and a chance to pull up even with RSL for second in the West. It’s another beautiful Saturday in the Park. You won’t want to miss it!

If you had started the season without looking at the schedule, you probably wouldn’t have thought that the first LA-Seattle match in May would be a match between the 4th and 7th in the West.

However, all of that’s just math. With Seattle having at least two matches in hand against the sides above them in the table, without having to finish the 2011-2012 CONCACAF Campaign, Seattle could just as easily be top of table. LA, however, cannot quite say the same. While they have a game in hand over the top of the table, dropping as many points as they have, even with wins in their games in hand, they’d still be about third.

It’d be easy to blame the loss of Omar Gonzales as to Los Angeles’ woes, but I don’t believe it’s that simple. Slosh Saunders (although he missed the last match for “personal reasons” and the rumor is that he’ll be unavailable for Wednesday…) has long been questioned as a solid backstop (at least by the Brougham Faithful) and the Questionable Haircut Trio of Beckham, Donovan, and Keane haven’t exactly been lighting things up. Let’s face it, when you’re relying on Pat Noonan (Yes, THAT Pat Noonan) to salvage a draw against FC Dallas, strange things are afoot at the Circle K.

But, with all that said, Los Angeles will be facing a Rave Green side that has been battling injuries and still seems to have some pieces out of sync, probably due to the aforementioned injuries. The sync will come in time, as players get healthy and get more time on the pitch together.

Historically, you can count on LA to come out strong against Seattle. With their struggling form of late, you can bet that Bruce Arena will tell them that the road to grabbing the Shield this year goes directly through us…and that their run starts on Wednesday. (Probably should have told them that it started a month or so ago…but whatever.)

Last, May sees us playing NINE matches in all competitions in May, with two matches a week almost all month. Hope you’ve been doing that cardio (Rule 1…) and getting that voice in shape. The 2012 campaign could well hinge on our success early this season, and the boys need us in full voice this month!

GET IN!

Chicago away. It’s always a bit of a grudge match and always a drag-down, knockout fight. Historically Sounders FC have been successful at 1-0-2 but it’s always a close match. In 2009 Tyrone Marshall won a late header to draw the match level at 1-1. In 2010 Blaise Nkufo netted in the 89′ minute to give Sounders their only win in Bridgeview. Last year’s match was a 0:0 snoozefest.

Fire find themselves on coming into Saturday’s fixture on a decent run of form with a 2-1-2 record after fire matches. They beat Toronto away 2:3 this past Saturday after FW Oduro netted within the first 40 seconds. The team is led in scoring by Oduro who has found the net three times thus far this season. Perhaps his most impressive statistic is that 69% of his shots have been on target.

Sounders find themselves off to the best start in their short history at 3-1-1. However, goals have been coming at a premium with one goal from the past 310 minutes. Perhaps telling how much the squad needs Eddie Johnson to get to his top form is the fact that that lone goal was scored by defender Zach Scott. It’s just a matter of time before Montero opens his scoring account for 2012 and, as always, it’s predicted that once he nets the rest will come in droves!

About the ECS Monthly Happy Hours

Many have asked, “What’s the best way to get involved in ECS and really get to know the members?” Match day is usually the worst time as most of us are busy fulfilling differing roles for ECS operations (tifo, capo, street team, etc.). That is why we have created the monthly happy hours for people to come out when most of our members are really able to relax and have a drink away from the chaos. Everyone is invited to join whether you are an ECS member or not!

We encourage anyone who wants to meet new people, find out how you can get more involved, or just have a pint with friends to join us. This is the perfect opportunity to really get to know some of the leadership and other members in a very casual environment, as well as let them get to know you. Feel free to come by yourself or with other friends who might be interested in the ECS and Sounders. The happy hours will rotate every month.

Outside of Cascadia most teams are hated pretty much the same by our group. Whether it be LA, NYRB or L’Impact de Montreal (also known as Sounders FC’s b-team) whomever Sounders FC plays that week is the enemy and we move on from week to week. Through physical play, bordering on downright dirty from time to time, Colorado has won-over (if you will) a special level of fury in Sounders nation and within ECS.

It was almost a year ago that Brian Mullen became the villain that our supporters love to hate. Obviously we don’t need to re-hash why we love to hate him. Instead this could be the first time SINCE that moment that in many ways defined our 2011 season that he may play in Seattle. Last year Mullen did not travel to Seattle for our 4:3 victory over Colorado on July 16th despite being match fit and eligible to play.

This year Colorado finds themselves in a position where they haven’t really gotten the motor running. They’re still without their play maker and talisman Conor Casey. Omar Cummings has had decent productivity with two goals from five games but it’s clear the team misses the combination of size and speed that the Casey-Cummings combination provides. Their biggest struggles have been in allowing goals on the defensive side. They have allowed seven goals while allowing the same number.

The good news for Sounders FC is that cRapids DM Pablo Mastroeni will be out yet again as he battles a concussion. While it’s certainly unfortunate for the visitors it will definitely allow a bit more space in the middle of the field for Evans and Alonso to operate. The two will definitely need to step up their game and look for shots if the Sounders are going to end their current 198 minute goalless streak. Also look for Montero and Fernandez to get off the mark against a relatively weak cRapids defense. If they can get their 2012 scoring account started or if Estrada can add a fifth Sounders FC should be in a good position to take a full three points.

We’re making it easier than ever to join our ranks in 2012! We began selling memberships in the stadium March 7th against Santos Laguna (from 90 minutes to 15 minutes to kickoff). We will not have extra t-shirts or scarfs.

If you can’t make it by the table to pick up your gear we’ll ship it to you.

Saturday was certainly not a match to remember. The Sounders seemed a bit flat and were ultimately unable to adapt to San Jose’s physicality. Obviously Leinhart went out and won a controversial penalty, San Jose parked the bus and the rest is history. Of course it’s a shame to lose a match like that. The best part of the MLS season is that there’s a match, and hopefully redemption, right around the corner.

Now DC will be looking to test the Sounders meddle in our nation’s capital. Last Friday saw DC utterly destroy F*C* Dallas 4:1 at home. The good news for Sounders FC is that until last Friday DC had been a bit slow out of the blocks. They lost in week one at home to Sporting KC and in week two to LA Galaxy. They only started to get the 2012 season on the tracks in week three at Vancouver earning a 0:0 draw.

The question for Saturday is which DC and Seattle teams will show. Will we see Sounders come back with the confidence and urgency we saw against Toronto? Will we see the DC team that never looked with it and lost 1:3 on the road in LA? We’ll know for certain Saturday.

Talk about Saturday’s fixture here: http://www.weareecs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=18122

One thing that is sure is that this Saturday we’ll have a traveling contingency of around 200 in DC. If you’re one of the traveling crew check out our Facebook link for the pre-match events and match plans here:

Here’s the Facebook link for those of you that are going to the match:
https://www.facebook.com/events/330476850337612/

The match starts at 730 EST so the plan is to tab out and be ready to march by 5:30. PQST is a 15 minute, .7 mile march to L’Enfant Plaza Meteo Station, and from there a direct shot, 5 stops to RFK, Stadium/Armory Metro Station…

For those of us not able to see our beloved Sounders play at RFK Stadium in person, our Seattle viewing party will also include a fundraiser for the ECS FC.

That’s right, the supporters like to play the beautiful game, too. So come out to the AC early, have some beverages, watch our boys take three points from the four-time MLS Champs, and win some great prizes that support the supporters.

It was not pretty. Matches against Houston seldom are. They say that the best teams find ways to win. The boys in green are 2-0 for the first time since 2009…and the five goals in two matches is a far cry from the slow offensive start last year. And Seattle retains their unbeaten streak against Houston at home. Houston has never, ever won in Seattle. May that streak against the Creamsicles last for the next several hundred years.

The Houston match was everything we thought it would be: Slow, chippy, and physical. While Estrada’s fourth(!) of the season really kinda looked like an own-goal to us, we’re not about to complain to the scorers. Evans’ PK pretty much sealed Houston’s fate (although, again, the PK was awarded for the sort of stuff that goes on during every set piece you’ve ever seen. No complaints.)

Missing captain Mauro Rosales clearly had an effect on our play-making. While no one will ever accuse Roger Levesque of not giving 110% ever minute he’s on the pitch, enthusiasm and heart don’t always make up for vision and skill. Against Houston, which was always going to be a grind, perhaps that creativity wouldn’t have been as missed as it would have been against a team like RSL or LA.

The defense looked pretty good, but the part that made us happy was watching Gspurning make two solid saves, and seeing him start to bark at his defense when they weren’t where he thought they should be. Sounders are becoming his team, and that appears to be one less thing to worry about.

It takes a few matches together to really come together as a team, especially with so many new faces. Being able to win while you’re doing that can make the difference in the Supporters Shield race. Too early to start counting chickens…but it’s better to win your first two than lose your first two any way you look at it.

This week, the Smurfs come to RBP, where, last year, they tried (and failed) to spoil Kasey Keller’s going away party. San Jose usually plays an entirely different style from Houston. Fast, always moving forward attack…and with Golden Boot Wondolowski up front, why wouldn’t you play that way? Houston managed to steal a point (1-0 on a PK…) in San Jose before coming here, but San Jose managed to pound a tired Toronto 3-0 this past week.

Completely opposite last week, expect this game to be less grinding, and more open. While no one will mistake San Jose for RSL or LA, San Jose has been known to put up decent goal totals, but they are very, very streaky. Our defense could find San Jose a good test…or not.
