Fellow ECSers,

That end of year party was a bit of mayhem wasn't it? Debauchery was rampant. I would say that the video by Pappermaker FC was pretty awesome and one of the highlights of the evening. Though it was named the end of year party it felt more like beginning than an ending. March 25th is rapidly approaching and there is so much to do. We have Tifo to make, the St. Patddy's day march, membership drives and much more. This is the final stretch so lets all get stuck in!

Travel with ECS to Salt Lake!

ECS
is traveling to the SSFC at Real Salt Lake game on Saturday, April 10.
RSL are the defending MLS Cup Champions and this is their home opener,
lets show them how real supporters act. We have 200 tickets and they will
go on sale in February. Clear your calendar now and keep your eyes on http://www.weareecs.com/travel/ for more info!

Electioneering

It is that time again. Time to elect ECS members to the counsel. By our extremely scientific calculations there should be at least 52 ECS members on the counsel. There are 4. This needs to change. Use your power as a season ticket holder to get more of us in there. Voting is simple and easy: Head on down to the ECS forums and see who are the endorsed candidates, go to the voting website, log in, select ballot "Sounders FC Council Member Nomination", and watch democracy in action.

Who Are Ya?: Ben a.k.a fox3r

fox3r

1) When and how did you first follow soccer?

I have been
following soccer since I started playing around the age of 6. My dad
was a big Manchester United fan and so I inherited the love for the
boys in red with him and that was the first team I follow. The Sounders
addiction started in 2007 right before their championship run and I
have been following them since then.

2) When and how did you first meet up with the ECS?

My
first meeting with the ECS was at the inaugural MLS game against the
New York Red Bulls in the heart of the Brougham End. I went to the USL
Sounders game against the Charleston Battery the previous year and saw
a bunch of crazy people singing all the time waving flags and going
nuts. I new that was the place I need to be so I did everything in my
power to get into the GA for as many games as possible last season.

3) What is supporter culture to you and why are you a supporter?

Supporter
culture to me is being as active as possible (some might say crazy) in
your undying devotion to your team, to me it is the Seattle Sounders.
Every game (and also everyday) you share you ups and downs of the
Sounders with the people who go through the same emotional roller
coaster we call a soccer season. I am a supporter because when I think
of the Sounders, I know that I have to help them win with all my heart.
The louder I am, the more tifo they see, and all the other things that
we supporters do pushes them to give that extra bit of effort to bring
home 3 points for the "crazies".

4) What is your favorite moment being a supporter?

My
favorite moment of being a supporter is the time I get to spend with
the crazy bastards of the ECS, but on a more specific note it would be
the US Open Cup game against Portscum (Portland Timbers). The bus ride
down to Portland was a great experience with singing and drinking, pure
pandemonium. Stepping of the bus was a wake up call that I had never
experienced. I had just arrived in my rival's city and it was like a
hornets nest, people were yelling at us non stop, but we stuck together
and kept on singing. The game went exactly like I expected it to go, a
win for the Sounders over Portscum. Roger Levesque goal after only a
minute will stick in my mind as one of the best goals of the entire
season as it was the beginning of a great run to winning our first cup
as an MLS franchise.

5) What is the game day experience like for you?

Game
day is what I wait for all week long. It starts early in the morning
with either a car ride or bus ride from Bellingham to Fuel in Seattle
where I begin the ritual of getting drunk with my fellow ECSers. We
march to the match and enter the best place in the entire state of
Washington, the Brougham End and Qwest Field. The whole day has been
ramping up to the kick-off and once that happens its work time. I am as
loud as possible for as long as possible to help push the boys that
extra foot past the defender for a winning goal. Every near miss is a
heart break and every goal is a celebration.

6) What is it like being an ECS member in Bellingham?

Being
an ECS member in Bellingham has its positives and negatives. Up here
there aren't as many fans, so when you see another Sounders supporter
you automatically strike up a conversation about the best goal you have
seen or the away game that you were fortunate to attend. Not being in
Seattle is hard because I can't be as involved as I want to be in the
making of tifo, the decisions of the ECS, and other things, but it
makes me have to support the ECS in other ways. I try to convert
Sounders fans that I meet to ECS members and go nuts for an entire
match. Also the 2 hour bus ride down to Seattle gives me a chance to
get a head start on the pre-game drinking before any of the Seattle
ECSers do (and probably before a lot of them are up for early games).

7) What would you like to see from the ECS in the future?

So
far I think that the leaders of the ECS are doing a great job and we
are headed in the right direction and will continue to give them my
support for their plans. Personally, I want to see the ECS to take over
the entire Brougham End and be spanning all the south end sections with
tifo that rivals the supporters groups of Europe and South America.
Also I would love to see the ability for the ECS to use smokes/flares
in the Brougham End, but that's just because I'm a pyro.

Play List: S.S.C. '74

SSC 74

Each month we are asking one supporter about what music they are currently listening to. This month it is Jason a.k.a. S.S.C ' 78 who is a Brogham Boy and the epitome of what ECS is.

Fire

1)
Subhumans – EP-LP (1986) Bluurg

Stop just about any punk on the streets anywhere from LA to NY, and on
to London and they can tell you who the Subhumans are.
The band comprised of members Dick Lucas (vocals), Bruce Treasure (guitar),
Phil (bass), and Trotsky (drums) got its start in 1980, and this album is a
compilation of the first four EPs the band released from '81 to '83.
EP-LP is raw, chaotic, and unhinged. This album shows the Subs in their most
raw form. Later releases by this band such as From the Cradle to the Grave, and Worlds Apart gained much praise for the combination of a literal
and instrumental creativity and wit not possessed by many bands from the same
genre. While this album takes more of an "in your face" approach you
can hear the genesis of these later works slowly being born throughout these
four EPs.

Dick's lyrics are not for the politically faint of heart and he manages to
tackle everything from nuclear war to cancer and lost love in this collection.
In the 80's the Subhumans offered an alternative to the brand of punk that was
being bought and sold like so much cocaine in those days.

Disfear-Live the Storm

2)
Disfear – Live the Storm (2008) Relapse Records

Formed in the early 90's Disfear is a Swedish D-Beat band consisting of
members Tomas Lindberg (vocals), Bjorn Peterson (guitar), Henke Frykman (bass),
Marcus Andersson (drums), and Uffe Cederlund (guitar). Lindberg has quite a
laundry list of fronting bands such as The Great Deciever, Skitsystem, Lock-Up,
and At the Gates.
Drawing heavily from such influences as Discharge, and Motorhead; Disfear
doesn't fuck around and delivers a wall of sound that is guaranteed to get the
hair on the back of your neck standing on end. The band connected with
Converge's Kurt Ballou who recorded, engineered and mixed this first full-length
release from these boys since Mysanthropic Generation in '03. From start to
finish this album never lets up. Blistering guitar, drum beats akin to machine
gun fire, and whiskey throat lyrics, half slogan and half poetry, are all
fighting to get atop the massive sound created by this group. I highly
recommend checking this album out!

Pietasters-Oolooloo

3)
The Pietasters – Oolooloo (1995) Moon Ska Records

Headed by front man Stephen Jackson this ska/soul group formed back east
in the early 90's from a group of college kids with roots in punk, ska, and reggae.
The Pietasters got their big break during the 90's when the third wave of ska
got its grip on the youth of America and the Pietatsers wound up being the
opening act for UK ska greats Bad Manners. Boasting a line up that has
compromised twenty plus members over the life of the group the Pietasters have
released six studio albums, and twice that amount of EPs and singles all of
which are worth a listen.
Released on the now defunct Moon Ska record label Oolooloo is a prime example
of a third wave band understanding the music and playing ska the way it was
meant to be heard. The lyrics of front man Jackson run the gambit of from true
love, to booze filled nights of depravity. The brass end of this band delivers
through and through and the whole album comes together to bring any lover of
the genre something unique and sometimes sorely missed these days. In my
opinion one of the best U.S. ska bands around and this album shows the
Pietasters at their best.

The Devil Makes Three
4)
The Devil Makes Three – The Devil Makes Three (2002) Snazzy Productions

Devil Makes Three is a trio of musicians hailing from Santa Cruz who
bring a mix of blue grass, blues, old time, folk and rag time to the table. The
band consists of members Pete Bernhard (Vocals, guitar), Lucia Turino (Stand up
Bass), and Cooper McBean (Banjo, guitar).
One thing that immediately gripped me about this band when I first listened to
them was Pete Bernhard's excellent songwriting ability. He truly brings
something lyrically unique to the table, and is somewhat of a genius as a
songwriter. His style draws much from pre World War 2 influences while
introducing a punk rock twist to it all. Bernhard has a unique ability to tell
a good story as well, an ability that seems to be missing from songwriting
these days.
To be honest the music itself is hard to put your finger on and if anyone was
to ask me the true style of this bands music I would be at a loss for words.
Just think punk rock jug band and you'll be hitting close to the mark. The
music is fun loving at times and earnest and hard working at others.
Grab yourself a shot of Jack or four, sit down and take this one in. You won't
be disappointed.

Awaydays: Chivas USA 1 – SSFC 0

Editor: The Sounders went to LA 3 times this year, this is Timm's recolection of the 2nd time down to that cesspit that is LA.
6/6/09 Home Depot Center, Carson CA

Going
to an away game is like nothing else. When you go to a home game you
have you routines. You wake up at about the same time, you take the same bus, go to the pre funk,
meet and greet all your friends, stand at the same place on the
terrace, and celebrate a win or drown your sorrows with the crew
afterwards. You are one in a mass of thousands. Not to say that this is a bad thing, but you get used to it. Away everything is different.

I arrived at the HDC a little latter than I had hoped so the tailgate session was well under way when I got there. Many of the ECSers
were deep into their cups and some benign banter was going back and
forth between us and the Union Ultras(one of two supporters groups that
Chivas USA has) who shared the same parking lot as us. I had time for
one beer before the work was to begin. The Sounders had played Chivas
earlier in the year, and our tifo was limited to a few two poles with
out their poles and a couple of flags. This time we decided to up it a little. The SoCal Sound had made an overhead/rail banner and a large amount of green confetti. The Chivas FO had said we could bring in our drum, "a couple of flags",
and as many rail banners as we wanted. No two poles and no
overheads(some bullshit about them needing to be fire retardant).
Everything had to be at the HDC the day before to be approved. That wasn't going to happen so we just amassed all of our tifo a few hours before the game(a few two poles included), brought it to the front gate, said we had permission to bring it in, were let in with out any problem. We then set up for the display. I
don't think security realized how big the overhead/rail banner we
brought in was until we unfurled it pre-match(it spanned the whole
section and covered about three rows of seats). Several security guards
ran up to us and told us that we wouldn't be able to display it, but we
again lied and told them we had permission.
As game time approached it was disappointing to see the Chivas support. Half the stadium was empty, the
Union Ultras had a much smaller contingent than last time, and the
Legion 1908(the other supporters group) didn't show up at all. After
the national anthem confetti was thrown, the overhead went up, and the display went well(especially considering it was the SoCal Sound's first time setting up a display!). There was good voice from us
throughout the match. We even tried to engage the home crowd with a
round of "We all hate Beckham" which they didn't really pick up. The
match was less successful. Seattle dominated possession and Chivas fouled everything in sight. The Sounders succumbed to a cheap goal by Eduardo Lillingston, and the game ended 1-0. After
the game we waited in our section until the stadium cleared out and got
the obligatory security escort to our cars. We hung around for a bit
talking about the match and other things but eventually we had to clear out of the parking lot and catch our flights back home.

What I took away from the experience is that going away is when you begin to feel like a true supporter. Away you are in the minority. There is no place to hide. When your voice tires, there is no one to pick up the slack. It is up to you who made the trip to support the team. You band together with your friends, old and new, and raise you voices high. And when you finally get home you can smile to your self and know you were a part of something special.

Coming up…

Next moth it will finally be here. The season starts and we will give you all the preseason coverage. We will also be bringing you another supporter profile, an away trip to DC and much more…
