Fellow ECSers, It is finally here. All those months of waiting and now it is on. Things are kicking off with a bang as the scum and Vancouver come and visit here so they can learn how to propperly support a team. Then March 15th comes. What can I say? The game against LA starts our season, and we want it to get off to an amazing start. Here is to the start of a new season with good friends and amazing times ahead. I don't know about you but I'm not going to get any sleep from now until then.

Know Your Subgroups: The Armed Services Group
Who we are
The Armed Services Group is an official sub-group of the ECS. We are a group formed not only by region but by our shared experience of military service to our country and our love of the Seattle Sounders. Our members are active duty, separated or retired service members and our Allies; we are also open to families of service members and all those that wish to support the Armed Services. Our members are not only stationed on the various military installations here in the Puget Sound, but all over the United States and around the world wherever duty calls. Though our membership may stretch clear across the world, we always look back to Seattle and the Brougham End as home.
What we do
The Armed Services Group (ASG) was established in the Sounders' 2009 inaugural season. The main purpose of the ASG is to grow support for the Seattle Sounders among our fellow military service members and families. We show support not only here in the Puget Sound area but anywhere in the world that duty calls us. Last season we developed a partnership with the Sounders Front Office and Warrior Transition Battalion here on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The ASG provided what we referred to as the "ECS Match Day Experience" which allowed ASG members to bring soldiers from the WTB up to Sounders matches. The WTB soldiers are escorted from JBLM to Fuel (a pub in Downtown Seattle) where they meet fellow members of the ECS. Then they participate in The March to the Match, chanting and singing along side all the ECS down to Qwest field and into the Brougham End. The Sounders Front Office supported this program by donating tickets to several games last season, creating a one of a kind partnership in the MLS. This show of support spurred our fellow members within the ECS and others outside of the ECS to donate tickets that they could not use themselves. Again the Sounders Front Office has taken the lead in this project for the 2011 season, increasing the number of matches they have donated to. The ASG is currently developing a new partnership with the Fisher House here on JBLM, to help provide supplies and support for the families staying there. In the future we hope to start other partnerships with Veteran's and military organizations across the Puget Sound, not only to gather support for our beloved Sounders but to show our unending support for our veterans and fellow service members. The ASG participated in the on field events during Military Appreciation Day 2010, and we hope to continue this tradition in seasons to come.

Editor: This month quite a few of the ECS chimed in with what match day is like for them. Here are a few of our favorites ECSNewsletter@gmail.com
" Match day is a day that I can forget all my troubles and guilt and just be myself without any judgement. It is hard for me to find people that I can tolerate and the ECS as a whole are a group that I am PROUD to call my family. Outside of my job you can't easily find that brother/sister hood. Only in a fireight have I shared the same emotions as I do on matchday, you all have helped me through a very rough time in my life and I can not thank you all enough. Forever will you all be my brother's and sister's and I am proud to say that, so in short thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. I owe you all more BB's than you can imagiane so once agian thank you form the bottom of my heart for showing me that there is more to live for than myself."

"Match day for me is a little different than for the rest of ya'll. As most of you know, I've been stuck in shit-ass Mosul, Iraq for the past year. So match day for me goes something like this.
First thing, is that I pray it is an early kickoff. I worked 7 am to 7 pm last year, and being 11 hours ahead of Seattle means i got nothing of a 7:30 kick off. So 4:30 pst was the best I oculd hope for. I would get up at 4:30 (z + 3), turn on the computer, and go to myNW.com. Then I would hope that the internet would work, so I could get into the streaming area early. Then, off to the shower, and then back to the room to get dressed. By this time, I would start to hear Arlo on the prematch show. I would get dressed real quick, put my ASG scarf on, and stand out side with the computer turned up so I could have my last cig before the match. Kick off would come, and all i could hear would be Arlo (loitering with intent) and my ECS brothers and sisters singing. By 6:50 my time, there'd only be about 10 mins left and I would have to walk to work. Many days I would listen to 75 minutes and not even know the results until I was able to pull it up on google. But regardless, hearing ya'll sing across the miles, and Arlo screaming about how awesome Dairy Queen is, would make it all worthwhile. Hell, I listened to the 4-0 thrashing from the Gals and I still felt good that day, because I spent a part of it with my other family, and just for a little bit, I got to forget where I was. That's my match day. "

"I was telling someone last night at The Dray about rediscovering this poem recently, and how it made me think of Zach.
Upon further reflection, I think it describes the modus operandi for most of the individuals in the ECS, and thus why we are drawn together:
"Credo" by Jack London
I would rather be ashes than dust.
I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
The function of man is to live, not to exist.
I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.
I shall use my time.
May we all live, not just exist, on Match Day."

"What we have in common is that we were on the street every minute playing soccer, day and night. We were always busy, games juggling, shooting at the crossbar. The ball was everything for me, for us." -Nourdin Boukhari
