Participation for the Houston match

General ECS talk.

Unread postby uwmike » Mon Aug 11, 2014 12:13:26 am

So for the match tonight my bus got delayed a bunch and I wasn't in the GA area until about 7:25, so I ended up standing in 122 about 3 rows from the back (usually I'm 7 or 8 rows up). I really noticed that the participation and energy was lacking, and I'm not sure if that's the general case or if today was just the issue. Sometimes its fine if people want to take a break with chanting and what not but FIVE people (not all the same group) right in front of me where sitting down in lower 122, which definitely bugs me since we're always saying "Participation is the expectation," and that everyone in the ECS area is expected to give their full 90. What's the deal there, is it my place to tell them to not be lazy and get up/support, or am I supposed to just let that go? I don't intend to start an argument with people, but at some point you have to say, "hey stand or go somewhere else to sit," right?

The back few of 121-123 is almost always like that in my experience. Better there than the front few I suppose? I've always assumed it's where people who bought tickets on stubhub ended up.

I just feel like something should be done about this... I really enjoy the feeling when I can shout and not even hear myself...those are the days when you know ECS is in full voice, but not last night :/

Last night was pretty normal from my spot a little bit above Timm. I don't know where in the section you usually stand, but I don't think there is anything surprising about the back rows being less intense than other parts of the section. As long as people are selling their tickets to non-ECS members via the SSFC ticket exchange or scalpers, there will be parts of the section that aren't aligned with our mindset. I think it's good for them to congregate in the extremities.

He said he was about 3 rows from the back, and it was the row in front of him.

I think I was in row U or V in 122, I'm usually in row G or H btw for the person who was asking.

Thanks for the clarification.
That would make more sense.
It sucks that this continues to happen 5 years along...but it is best if you just ignore them.

I think the Jersey Shore Crew was back... group of "bros" about 4 rows down from the topo in 122 were spending the whole game taking selfies with some chicks in front of them and taking the piss out of the capo.

That was real unusual for something like that, and that widespread, to be smack in the middle of 122. Guess it was a good thing I didn't drink much y'day because otherwise I'd have been down there taking a name or two.

Yeah...they weren't too far from me either...rather annoying with their random roid-rage WOOOOing during our chants.

So much for the whole "don't go on your phone except for halftime" rules right?

The simple fact is, unless we were given control of ticketing into the section (Which the FO will never do) or we grow enough to continually fill the section with people of the same mentality, this type of stuff will continue to happen. To be honest, we have plenty of ECS members who don't participate fully every match. You can look around and see familiar faces, people a lot of ECS members know, not singing, holding conversations in the section, on their phones, etc. I used to worry about it, I started by yelling, then I started by trying to be encouraging. Now I realize that allowing myself, during match day, to be concerned with such things, only pulls down me from giving my full support. Don't be the casualty. Just sing louder, pogo higher, wave a flag longer. Time is what we need. It'll get there with time, so long as we keep fighting the good fight.

The best way to increase participation is to get our well supporting members into the section, and we have more pull there the more demand there is.

So, if you're not an STH in the ECS sections and want to be, get your name on the list: https://www.weareecs.com/join/ecs-section

it is by force of attrition that we will expand our culture. when you see people do that, the best thing is to focus on your own support. make it look fun, well because it is. be an inspiration to those sitting on their ass and they will come around.
