Cascadia Cup Travesty - an Open Plea

Talk about US Leagues and the US National team here.

Unread postby TGos » Wed Aug 05, 2009 4:23 am

This is an open plea to all the members of ECS who supported the creation of the Cascadia Cup, particularly those who contributed financially to its manufacture.

The Cascadia Cup was from the start a supporter?s cup, conceived and financed by the supporters of the three clubs. Each year members of the three clubs would, in the spirit of fairness, decide how the cup would be contested that year. The three groups split hairs to make sure that even with unbalanced schedules, the competition was equitable.

So I am a little more than incensed that Portland and Vancouver are claiming to vie for the "Cascadia Cup" this year, when only those two teams are competing. How in God's name can only two of the three teams hold a competition and call it the Cascadia Cup? It goes completely against the spirit in which the cup was created.

I am writing a letter to the Portland and Vancouver supporter groups. I want both of them to know that at least to this fan and financial sponsor of the cup, their two team competition will not be recognized. I would like to have more signatures on the letter.

So, if you were part of the initial push for the creation of the cup, and especially if you contributed financially to the physical cup, please let me know if you agree ASAP!

The timing of this post is no accident, as Portland hosts Vancouver on Thursday night (8/5/09) in their final game of the year. I plan on sending this letter tomorrow morning.

Yes, I believe it matters (obviously).

No Cascadia cup, unless they want to give it to us because we kicked their asses.

USL for now. In 2011, we will all be MLS and it will continue then.

so if the cup is for usl, and there are only two teams able to compete for it, would it then be unjust to say that they cannot compete for it anymore no matter who paid for it?

It was never defined. It think the legitimacy of the cup should span which ever league the teams are in. But all three teams should be included.

This would be the same if only one of the Portland or Vancouver were coming up to MLS.
The Cup should be put on hold.

I said the same thing a year ago, and received very little support.

My question is when all 3 of the "Cascadia" teams are in the MLS, do we add them to the Heritage Cup as well? And then do we add San Jose into the Cascadia Cup? Not sure what will happen down the road with both of these.

if that's the case, then you have a valid point.

Yeah, I've been doing some work on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle-Portland_Rivalry. Help out if you have stuff to add or can find match reports.
